A Silly Poem
By Spike Milligan
Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I’ll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?
2B or not2B?
Our stalwart Chair of Trustees, Meg Lansom stepped down at the end of July, having done a whopping ten years in the “job”. We are all very sad to see her go and will really miss her knowledge, guidance, wisdom, great ideas and wacky humour. She certainly deserves a well-earned rest from the often onerous administration and duties of running a registered charity. On the bright side, we’re not losing her completely – she will remain a regular Saturday Club and Allotment Volunteer, and hopefully we can rope her in to help at parties etc.
Going forward, we have a great team of Trustees in Carol Wilkinson (our new Chair), Sarah Bax-Jaeger (Treasurer),Angela Jumbo, Lorraine Saunders and Madeleine Furminger
Memory Lane Allotment
Many thanks to everyone and anyone who helped in any way to support our Cake Stall and Hamper Raffle at the Eastbourne Allotment Society Annual Summer Show last Sunday, 28th July. Thankfully this year we had lovely sunshine rather than wind and rain!! There was a great party atmosphere, with live music, and even some dancing. In total we made a whopping £287.10 (£184.90 from the cakes and £102.20 from the raffle).
We’re having another Tea and Cake Afternoon at the Memory Lane Allotment (behind Thomas A Becket School in Kings Drive) on August Bank Holiday Monday (26th) from 2.00p.m. Please see our flyer – or ask Deb for details of how to get there. Helping with the weeding is strictly optional!!!
Dementia-Friendly Cinema at the Towner:
The film on Wednesday, 7th August will be“ Wilding” – a magical film about “conservation pioneers Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell, who inherited Knepp Castle near Horsham in West Sussex, a failing 400-year-old estate. In a leap of faith, they decided to let nature take back the land, battling entrenched tradition to do so. The first scheme of its kind in Britain, Knepp is now one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe and a beacon of hope for British wildlife, while Tree and Burrell have evolved from amateur wildlife lovers to dedicated conservationists – both knowledgeable about the catastrophic loss of biodiversity in Britain, and quietly hopeful that work like theirs can reverse the decline”.
The September film will be on Wednesday, 4th. as soon as I know what it will be, I’ll announce it at the Groups and will post details (including a trailer) on our Facebook page.
As always, the films start at 2.00 p.m., carers are free, everyone else is £5.00. You can prebook on the Towner website or pay by card or cash on the day. There is nearby parking – for Blue Badge holders there is a free carpark immediately behind the Towner; the “pay& display” Devonshire Park carpark further up College Road, and free local on-street parking if you are lucky enough to find a space!
Sunday Afternoon Traditional Band Concerts at Eastbourne Bandstand
Our Trustee Angela and her mum Muriel continue to love going to these concerts, weather and circumstances permitting, and prefer to sit on the upper level. So why not join them!! The concerts are every Sunday afternoon (except Airbourne week) to the end of September, they start at3.00 p.m., finish about 4.30 pm. As Memory Lane is registered with Eastbourne Bandstand, if you mention us when purchasing your tickets, you’ll get 10% off, and at the bar!! AND carers’ tickets are free!! I’ve listed all the dates and bands on the back page.
Changes to Saturday Club
With thoughts of the nights drawing in and accompanying darker mornings of Autumn, from September the Saturday Club is trialling a change of start time. So instead of 10.30 a.m. start, it will start at 12 midday and finish at 2.00 pm. It will include a light lunch of a bowl of homemade soup and a roll, as well as the usual hot drink. We’ll still have the initial quiz or word search when you arrive, but follow on with table and board games. Crafting will still be available for anyone who wants.
In Memoriam
Many of you will know Margaret Jordan, as a Carer, Volunteer and Friend of Memory Lane. Very sadly, her son-in-law, Stephen died suddenly in May. Margaret’s son Darren has kindly asked for any money donated in Steve’s memory to be given to Memory Lane. We have received a very generous £560 (so far)from his colleagues at Allianz (please see below), A.C. Fowler, Ian Colley and Julie Roper.
“In memory of Steve Whittam
We have made a donation of £500 to Memory Lane in memory of our former colleague, Steve Whittam.
Steve was a member of the Allianz team for more than 30years, with most of them spent at Allianz Trade. He is fondly remembered by many as a great colleague and a lovely man who brought cheer and laughter to the office. Steve will be sorely missed.
Chosen by Steve’s husband, Memory Lane is a charity which meant a lot to Steve and Darren. We hope this donation will help Memory Lane continue to support people with dementia, and their carers, by putting on activities which help this community to remain active and socially engaged.
Warmest Regards
From Allianz Trade NEUR Regional, UK-IE Management teams, colleagues & friends”
Donations
Our Games Volunteer Neil has very kindly donated the £300 he raised from giving a talk about his epic adventure when he rowed across the Atlantic. This is to go towards the costs of the coach outing to Bexhill. Our grateful thanks to Neil
